Moderation: Pre-Moderate every new user's FIRST response/comment to weed out spammers

Archived Dan B. 12 years ago

Hi guys!

We have some very agressive spammers on the Ask Dan & Jennifer forums. Literally they create a profile, make spam posts, then immediately create another profile, then another, and so on.

We can't enable pre-moderation for ALL posts because it's not feasible for us to review manually EVERY SINGLE POST that comes through. Also it would slow all the discussions tremendously waiting for review of all comments, since this is a live forum community.

Zoho Forums and WordPress both offer a very simple and elegant solution to this: require approval of every new user's FIRST post. After they make a post that gets approved, you know they're not a spammer, so there is no reason for the very expensive task of mederating all their subsequent posts.

That was the ONE and ONLY THING that I really liked about Zoho Forums.

Could you guys implement this, perhaps as an option under the Pre-Moderation setting?

Here's the screenshot from WordPress settings: http://www.screencast.com/t/vVArNd1a

Thanks!

In 2.3.2 we've improved Moderation system, so that topic started can leave comments in it without moderation and if you already commented in the topic, later comments won't go on moderation.

Also there is "Trusted User" category to be changed on profile to accept all topics and comments from this user

Dan, Could you please elaborate if spammers are registered automatically or manually, as we've made everything possible for our software to not allow any auto posts or registration with bots or scripts, so I guess it's manuall registration.

If it's done by real people (you can see it from behaviour), it's a good idea, but let's see if it applicable to not only you, as we have it first time stated.

Hey Stas. it is absolutely people doing it manually... something I've seen A LOT of over the past few years. it's real people with real email accounts...

The situation is very specific, I can't make any promises, but I think we'll make it once we tweak Moderation module closer to 2.2 release

Hi Stas. It's not really about "spammers" it's more about approving new members...

Once a member is approved, we no longer need to moderate all of their posts. Think of it more as member verification. Once the member has been verified, then their posts no longer need to be moderated.

Make sense?

Yes, it makes sense. Anyway, let's see what we have in in roadmap after 2.1 release to plan this. You'll know when the status is changed

He Stas! Is there any way to get this feature discussed above into 2.2? -- As clarified by Jennifer above. :-)

As our forums grow, we're seeing more spammers who create an account and make a bunch of posts right away. This means "new posts" AND replies to existing posts, so everyone on the thread gets notification to come check out the spam message.

Like the guy who replied to a bunch of discussions this morning with an attached photo of his penis. Not awesome lol. :-)

Thanks!!Dan

Hi Dan,

As of now we are considering adding it, but no time at all to take of that feature. Though, we have custom module written to allow moderation of responses or/and comments, so that not comments are going to be moderated, but only responses. This is the only solution we have as of now, but be sure that we'll work on moderation module tweaks once we have more people to work on the system improvements here
