Show Related Responses on Response Pages?

Archived Jennifer B. 12 years ago

Hey guys.

Do you have a way to show "Related Responses" on the individual Response pages? * Please say yes * :-)

So what I mean is when someone is reading a particular response (i.e. a forum post), they should see the post, and a bulleted list of related posts under it. Here's an example of this: http://www.screencast.com/t/Tv5vzLInh

Showing "related posts" is a HUGE boost to engagement on a site. This is why we show "Related Posts" on EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE of our high traffic websites.

Some Background on this: If you're not familiar with the purpose of showing "Related Posts": when people land on a post (from Google or even from the forum search), it may or may not answer their question. Regardless, they will want to see more content that is similar. So showing them a list of the other related responses are on the system will increase engagement, which is VERY important.

We finally enabled Google Analytics on our Ask Dan & Jennifer Forums and now have some numbers on "pages per visit", source of visits, etc. And now I have numbers: the average "pages per visitor" for people landing on the forums is 1.3. Compared with over 4 for our websites which show related posts. :-)

Thank for the idea. We'll consider it for Knowledge Base module probably. But let's see if it required for others. We were thinking of this, but no exact plans as of now.

Hey Stas.

When is the knowledge base module going to be available? Honestly these "related posts" should show on all "response" pages, not just knowledge base. Is that what you are intendeing? Thanks!

Don't want to give exact date, as we want to make it working smooth, and by now didn't decide whether to include that feature or not, but will take it into consideration. Now we are working on it, you need to follow Knowledge base thread to be up to date. But it's definitely will be released with 2.1 release.

Just a little patience, as we are preparing big update in about 1 month.

Also, knowledge base will inherit everything from responses and will add categorization + user-friendly data representation, so related posts feature will appear only on knowledge base articles with related from the same category-sub-category, as it's almost the same responses as others.

Stas, I'm VERY glad to see this status change to "In Progress"!!! :-)

Here's a more advanced example of how we use related posts: http://blogsuccessjournal.com/blog-tips-and-advice/how-to-start-a-blog/how-to-start-a-blog-and-make-money-online-in-10-easy-steps/

This is what we custom-designed for our content websites. Note the related posts both above AND below the article the visitor lands on. This increased our stickiness (pages per visitor, and time on site) tremendously. That's because people who are looking for one thing are almost always interested in CLOSELY RELATED stuff.

I'm very excited to see related posts on Responses... that should really increase the pages a person views in our forums.

Dan,

We've decided to include it in Knowledge Base module, and it will be only for knowledge base articles to show the articles - responses from the same category and as of now there weren't be ability to show related responses for all types - at least for the next 2-3 releases, as it will overwhelm system.

We try to keep it simple - so knowledge base is the only option now that will be available when module is live. Guess it's more than enough for the next several months

Also, related posts in other types of responses is not hard to deploy, so it can be done even with the help of the module without problems

Hey Stas.

I'm very excited still that related posts is coming!!

Could you include a configuration option in system settings to show related responses in regular posts as well? even could be just a checkbox inside the knowledge base configuration section in admin.

That way we can all decide to try it if we want, without having to change code. LOL We are still 2 software versions behind on both our installs because I dont' know what code tweaks we ended up making just to make "Question" be the default instead of "Idea". :-)

Thank you!!!

Sorry, but not on initial release of Knowledge Base module as we consider it to be overwhelming until we have solid module that is working smooth

Similar topics are done since 3.2 release that could be switched on and off in Administration - Properties section.
