Categories should be displayed in every post
Instead of showing the categories field on sidebar, it should be implemented in the first post to make easy for the user or public to know in which category that post belongs.
This makes UR more informational to user/ public about the post.
Next to "Report abuse or spam", aligned on left side. Here "Technology" is category.
Ex:

I don't think it's reasonable to show category right inside post area as we have too much there.
In 3.0 interface will be improved, but not in this aspect.
Category is more important to official representatives than user, but they know where to look at it. It's on visible postition.
If you want to change it's possition, you can develop custom module or override template in your theme
