Where are avatars saved?
I am getting an error about destination not being writeable..
I'm guessing this is a directory permissions issue

I guess you either migrated to another server or updated to 3.1.x version. Avatars are saved in /public/avatars/
Yes, it's permissions issue, so all files and folders inside /public should be writable. Better set 777 for all folders + subfolders and 666 for all files. Make sure to do the same for public folder.
